The Federal Communications Commission is set to gain the ability to cap prices on in-state calls made from prisons and jails, giving the federal regulator more power to tackle what it has called excessive rates.

The FCC would have the authority to ensure that charges for phone and video-calling services in prisons are “just and reasonable,” according to legislation passed last week by the House and Senate and which now awaits President Biden‘s signature. The FCC has up to two years to set new rates under the law.
