The dam is in “stable” condition after pre-planned safety measures were implemented, according to Newaygo County Emergency Services officials.

The stoplogs failed late Monday, July 26 or early Tuesday, July 27, authorities said.

The stoplogs are used to control the water levels.

City of White Cloud leaders said the failure caused a significant change in water levels both in the Mill Pond area above the dam and the downstream flow.

Crews were working Tuesday to replace the stoplogs and the work should be done in the next couple of days.

No flooding risk is expected for downstream homeowners, except for one property owner who already has been notified.

The stoplog failure will mean about a two-foot rise in water levels downstream sometime in the next 24 hours.

The dam was originally built in 1872, rebuilt in 1920 after flooding destroyed it and then reconstructed in 1990.

It is classified as a “high hazard” dam.

Officials with the Environment, Great Lakes & Energy office inspected the dam in 2019 and rated it satisfactory.

Staff with EGLE were at the dam site on Tuesday.
